Download Help

CLICK HERE to return to the Downloads page

If you are not familiar with downloading files from the Internet, the following information will help. If you follow the instructions carefully, you should not have any trouble downloading and installing Tax Assistant updates and related files.

The instructions given here relate to a Windows XP system with Internet Explorer 6. The procedure is similar for other versions of Windows and Internet Explorer.

Print this page and use it as a reference when you begin downloading files from our website.

Create a "Downloads" folder on your hard disk drive.
Before you do any downloading, you should set up a "downloads" folder on your hard disk drive. You will then be able to save all downloaded files in one place, where you can perform a virus check on them before running them or copying them to other locations within your system. It will also be easy to delete them when they are no longer required.

To set up a downloads folder proceed as follows:

  1. Use Start -> My Computer to open the "My Computer" window.
  2. Double-click the mouse on the disk drive (normally the C: drive) on which you want to create the downloads folder. This opens the drive and you can see the folders that are already on this drive.
  3. On the menu at the top of the window, select File -> New -> Folder to create a new folder. Initially, this folder is called "New Folder", but you can now type in a more suitable name for this folder. Call it "Downloads".

You have created a Downloads folder, which you can now use to save any files you download from the Internet.

Download a file from a website
Start Internet Explorer and go to a page from which you want to download a file, such as the Downloads page on this site.
Move the mouse over the link to the file you want to download.
Click the right mouse button to view the download menu.
Select "Save Target As..." on the menu to open the "Save As" window.
The name of the file you are going to download is shown in the box labeled "File name:" at the bottom of the window - do not change the name of the file in this box.
The location into which you are going to save the file is shown in the box labeled "Save in:" at the top of the window. Use the navigation buttons at the top of the window to select the Downloads folder you created above. You should only need to do this the first time you download a file. Internet Explorer will "remember" the location you previously selected and offer that as the default location for future downloads.
Click on the "Save" button to begin saving the file. You will be able to observe the progress of the download.
When the "Download complete" window appears, click on the "Close" button.
Your download is now complete.

Scan downloaded files for viruses
We recommend that, after downloading files into your Downloads folder, you should use your virus scanning software to scan all downloaded files before using them.

Installing downloaded files
To use downloaded files, you will find it very useful to learn the basics of using the Windows Explorer application, which is included with the Windows operating system. In particular, you should learn how to navigate the Windows filing system and how to copy files from one location to another. To access information on these topics, use Start -> Help to open the "Help and Support Center", then do a Search for "Windows Explorer".

There are two types of files that you will download from our website:

1. Program setup files
Program setup files are executable files with the extension .exe that are run to install Tax Assistant program modules, such as updated versions of the Tax Return programs. To run a setup, open "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer" and navigate to the file in your Downloads folder. Double-click the mouse on the file name to start the setup program, then follow the instructions to install the required files.

2. Data and information files
Included in this category are document files, such as the Tax Assistant user guides, and miscellaneous files, such as the Retail Price Index. In some cases you will have to copy a file from your Downloads folder into the appropriate folder within the Tax Assistant program folder or data folder. For example, you must copy the Retail Price Index file into your main Tax Assistant program folder. Follow the instructions on the Downloads page of our website to copy a file into the appropriate location.
